PETALING JAYA: Parti Amanah vice-president Mujahid Yusof Rawa has accused his former party, PAS, of having become drunk on Umno racialism and abandoning the party’s belief in the universalism of Islam.
Mujahid said his father Yusof Rawa, a founder of PAS, had upheld Islamic principles all this life.
However, PAS had now become racist after being “intoxicated by Umno’s doctrine, the racial statements and slander against the Chinese community and the DAP”.
Mujahid’s remarks was a counter to comments by PAS leaders at the recent muktamar. PAS Youth leader Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz had said that the DAP had provided some members with “liquor” (arak), which led to their departure to form Amanah.
“We are not the ones who are intoxicated, it is you who are,” Mujahid said, according to Malaysiakini. “This is why we are out of the party (PAS), and it is all because you are intoxicated by Umno.”
Amanah, a splinter group of PAS, was formed last year after a group of leaders in the progressive faction were ousted by conservative ulama-backed candidates at the party elections. The move came after a running dispute between the DAP and PAS over moves towards imposing Islamic criminal penalties in Kelantan, which was supported by Umno assembly members.
The dispute led to the breakup of the Pakatan Rakyat opposition alliance, after which Amanah and the DAP, together with PKR, formed Pakatan Harapan.
Mujahid also cricicised PAS leaders who wore baju melayu, kain pelikat and songkok at the muktamar, instead of their traditional white robes, which he described as mimicking Umno leaders.
“They way they (PAS) dress reflects whatever they have in mind, but even Umno did not go to this extent (to prove they are Malays),” Mujahid said.
He said the action of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang in brandishing a keris to cut a cake during the muktamar was a “mockery” to all Muslims.
