What I Did in Ramadhan

This year Ramadhan has been tarnished by violence and killings in the name of religion. It saddened us across different religious divide to hear and see fellow human become targets of hatred where innocent lives who have no connection what so ever with conflict had to pay a high price as victims.

Ramadhan is the month of mercy, a muslim competes to be closer to God by fasting day time and praying at night. The act of getting closer to Allah should produce peace in the heart and thus prevailing peace in the society.

One cannot imagine a peaceful heart pursues hatred and observe prejudice to certain and to certain extent pave the way to the path of terror and violence.

The least of this inconsistency is hate speech in the holy month and spreading threats to others “to protect Islam”. These bigots and zelouts are confined in their small world and tend to see everyone as enemy not knowing themselves becoming slaves to their seige mentality.

I had to challenge such mentality as it smeared the essence of Islam which demand consistency between peace in the soul and peace to the world. Thus I spent my Ramadhan to offer the mercifulness of Islam and the message of Peace to my fellow brothers and sisters of different faith.

I had the chance to organize buka puasa ( iftar, breakfast) with non-muslim friends at my home and other places. The biggest was the 28th of Ramadhan when I hosted as chairman of Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh to about 40 non Muslims and religious leaders of other faith than Islam. I was guided by Dato’ Dr Anwar Fazal who helped me to make things done.

We started walking from St George Anglican Church, passed by the temple of Goddess of Mercy than Sri Mahamariaman Temple, pit stop at Masjid Kapitan Keling and ended in Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh for a short tour and buka puasa. The whole walk was a 800 meters brief walk down the Street of Harmony.

I gave a 10 minutes speech as a host and stressed on 5 points as an essence of religiousity. Being human, embrace diversity, swift respond to kindness, spread peace and protect peace.

I was happy to received guest of different faith in the historical mosque coming together in a united stand against the rise of radicalism and extrimism. I cannot express how great it felt to conclude Ramadhan by delivering message of PEACE to the world.

It was a great Ramadhan when I realize friends of humanity and peace are one strong comrades showcasing their will and strength not to submit to the pressure of bigotory and extrimism.

Ramadhan delivered us the hope and we will never give up pursuing PEACE TO THE SOUL, PEACE TO THE WORLD.
